Grades 8-12: Baylor TIP

Baylor TIP

Students in grades 8-12 are provided opportunities to learn discipline-specific content that the typical student does not encounter until undergraduate or graduate-level coursework. Classes are taught by content experts who have completed graduate work in the field that they are teaching or who have equivalent professional experiences. These experts receive specialized training and coaching in effective teaching strategies for gifted adolescents. Guided in a variety of collaborative and independent activities by these content experts, TIPsters acquire skills and knowledge specific to the fields that they are considering as college majors and careers, which allows them to refine their own goals and aspirations before getting to college.

Students must be identified as Baylor TIP Scholars in order to enroll in Baylor TIP classes.

Clubs and Societies
Eighth through twelfth graders looking to connect over shared interests may join one of our emerging clubs and societies. These groups will meet multiple times over the course of a semester with a TIP mentor as guide to share common interests and explore skills within those interests more in depth. Meeting times and pursuits will be determined together as a group, and may be in person, although most will likely be online to facilitate access for all.

Online Courses
Learn the fundamentals of how engineers look at past failures to prevent future ones in this asynchronous course designed to last 15 weeks. In this class, students will learn about systems safety analysis techniques as they engage in case studies of 15 different engineering disasters. Students will examine the facts surrounding each case, do some reading, run some simulations, learn how to do complicated unit conversions, look at root cause analysis, and develop an on-going list of what to do and what NOT to do when designing new projects.

Baylor TIP Academy Summer 2025
Baylor TIP's inaugural courses for students entering Grades 8–12 were offered in June 2023. This summer, we are excited to offer three weeks of courses that are available as both commuter and residential options! We have two two-week courses and eight one-week courses. Students will select one class to take for the duration of the week. They may choose to stay overnight with us in the dorms and experience Baylor residential life. Day students have the same course offerings and may choose to participate in evening activities if they wish; however, they will not stay in a dorm on campus overnight.
