Frequently Asked Questions

1. My child is in ninth grade now; does this preclude him/her from participating in the TIP program?

Your child is still eligible to participate. If your child is in Grades 9–12 and qualified for or participated in Duke TIP, he or she can be part of Baylor TIP. If your child was unable to participate in a talent search due to the pandemic, students in Grades 8–9 can take one or more of the Baylor TIP above-level assessments and qualify for our program.

2. If my student was accepted into Duke TIP and/or Johns Hopkins CTY, will Baylor accept that as well? Will they still need to test?

If your child is in Grades 9–12 and qualified for or participated in Duke TIP, he or she can be part of Baylor TIP. To participate in Baylor TIP, students in Grades 4–6 and Grades 7–8 need to qualify and take one or more of the Baylor TIP assessments (even if they have qualified for CTY). This provides information to help us tailor our programs to fit the needs of our scholars.

3. Are students automatically enrolled for appropriate programming, or is it based on Scholar level?

Programming opportunities are based on the student’s test score, in addition to other factors used to identify potential.

For students in Grades 4–5, there are three distinctions:

  • Participant: tested and met the minimum qualification to participate in programs
  • Rising Star: tested and scored in the top 50% of participants
  • Top Performer: tested and scored in the top 25% of participants

For students in Grades 7–8, there are four distinctions:

  • Participant: tested and met the minimum qualification to participate in programs
  • Scholar: tested and scored in the top 50% of participants
  • Green Scholar: tested and scored in the top 25% of participants
  • Gold Scholar: tested and scored in the top 10% of participants

Students will be offered progressive learning opportunities that range from enrichment courses/opportunities to accelerated courses/opportunities. Students who score in the top 10%, for example, would be offered programming options that differ from students who score at the 50th percentile. This allows us to help all students move toward their true potential. Programming will focus on five domains: STEM, humanities, arts, social sciences, and business.

4. Do I need to submit hard copies of the qualifying paperwork for my child/student?

No. When individual students register to take one or more of the Baylor TIP assessments, parents will indicate how the student qualifies (i.e., top 25% on a standardized test, identified as gifted and talented, or educator/parent recommendation). Parents will provide qualification information on the registration form, but copies of qualifying paperwork do not need to be submitted at this time.

5. When will the student/parent receive rankings?

The testing window is open each year from July 1 through June 30. However, to be considered for our May Recognition Ceremony, students must test by February 28. Baylor TIP Scholars will be notified of their ranking by the end of March each year.

6. One of the goals mentioned on your website states, “Christian Commitment in caring environment.” What does this mean? Does this exclude all other religions?

Baylor is a private, Christian university. The mission of Baylor University is to educate men and women for worldwide leadership and service by integrating academic excellence and Christian commitment within a caring community. However, Baylor TIP is open to any student who qualifies, whether or not they subscribe to a particular faith.

7. Is testing recommended or required?

To be part of Baylor TIP, students first must qualify for and then take one of our above-level assessments. Students in Grades 4–5 will select the College Readiness Assessment 8/9 (CRA 8/9) and/or the Indicator of Academic Readiness 8/9 (IAR 8/9). Students in Grade 7 will select the College Readiness Assessment (CRA) or Indicator of Academic Readiness (IAR).

8. When will the student/parent receive testing scores?

Assessment scores are available within minutes upon completing the test. A detailed score report with educational recommendations is generated for parents and can be downloaded as a PDF. To learn more about how to interpret scores for the CRA 8/9, please view this video. To learn more about how to interpret scores for the CRA, please view this video.

9. My district is not a Baylor TIP District, or it is only assessing one grade level. What can I do?

If your child qualifies to take a Baylor TIP Assessment, you can register them individually on your own. Instead of taking the assessment at school, your child would take it at home online. The benefit of districts partnering with Baylor TIP is the lower price offered to them. However, if you would like your Grade 4, 5, or 7 child to take one or more assessments, and your district is not participating, you have the ability to register through us directly for $65 per assessment.

10. What programming is available after assessments?

Baylor TIP officially launched in Fall 2022. Therefore, programming will be rolling out over the next 5 years. For 39 years, the Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development has offered University for Young People for students in Grades 1–12 each June. The program is currently transitioning to align with the talent development model, and more information will be shared soon. In addition, programming such as Super Saturdays, academic competitions, online courses, college and career conferences, and more will be added. Remember, once a student qualifies as a Baylor TIP Scholar, he or she is eligible to participate in programs through Grade 12. The website will be updated with new program offerings as we launch them, and all Baylor TIP Scholars will be notified about the opportunities. Programs will be offered in multiple formats including in person and online and focuses on five domains: STEM, humanities, arts, social sciences, and business.

11. Will you provide scholarships for out of town or traveling students for Bayor TIP Assessments and programing at Baylor?

Needs-based scholarships will be available for Baylor TIP programs. Check back soon for information on how to apply for a scholarship.

12. I am a district leader and want to be a Baylor TIP District. Do districts decide on testing date?

Yes, districts determine when and where to offer the assessment(s) if they partner as a Baylor TIP District. We suggest offering the assessment during a school day or on a Saturday to make the opportunity as equitable and accessible as possible. If districts share information directly with parents and do not partner with Baylor TIP (i.e., do not register students and offer a specific date for testing), individual students will take the assessment(s) online at home.

13. Do districts decide who will take the test based on 25% of students' scores on local/state standardized tests, or parent/teacher recommendations?

Yes, Baylor TIP Districts determine which students qualify for the above-level assessment based on the criteria we outline. Any student who scores in the top 25% on a state or national standardized assessment (local norms are recommended but not required), who is identified as gifted or talented, or who is recommended by an educator or parent is eligible to take one or more of the Baylor TIP assessments. We are encouraging districts to be more inclusive when determining which students will test, as we want Baylor TIP to help discover student potential and match student needs to academic services.

14. When does Baylor send aggregate test data to districts?

Baylor TIP Districts receive individual student score reports, as well as aggregate reports for the district. District administrators will have access to view all reports, which are accessible within a few hours of the assessment. For districts that offer multiple testing dates, the aggregate report will be available after all students have completed the assessment.
